Exploring Use Cases on How AI Delivers Impact in Africa

"AI holds immense potential to boost Africa's economy and to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the continent, says a report published by the GSMA, a UK-based organization that aims to unify the mobile ecosystem to discover, develop and deliver innovation foundational to positive business environments and societal change. With funding from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the report's authors explain that "While AI is already being developed and deployed to support a range of use cases across African countries, little research has focused on building a body of evidence of AI use cases for development on the continent." They further explain that their "report is based on the analysis of over 90 use case applications identified in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa – which benefit from thriving tech ecosystems – across agriculture and food security, energy, and climate. While many AI use cases are relatively nascent, with some being deployed as part of projects or pilot schemes, a number of commercially viable solutions have also emerged. Often, AI is being incorporated into existing digital products and services, acting as an enabler to make digital solutions more relevant and efficient, amplify their impact, and facilitate scaling."

The report importantly points out that "The agritech sector is seeing most of the AI innovation, especially in Kenya and Nigeria where agriculture continues to play a significant role in the economy. AI is already being used for agricultural advisory, with companies like TomorrowNow and ThriveAgric providing farm-level insights to farmers, and for financial services with companies like Apollo Agriculture developing alternative credit assessment methods."

AI is also "being deployed in the energy sector, especially in Nigeria, where emerging technologies like Internet of Things (IoT) act as an entry point for advanced data analytics in smart energy management. Use cases such as energy access monitoring and productive use asset financing, developed by companies like Nithio, remain at a developing or nascent stage but present significant potential to reduce energy poverty. AI is also supporting climate use cases especially for biodiversity monitoring and wildlife protection in Kenya and South Africa, driven by large tech companies like Microsoft's AI for Good Lab and nonprofit organizations such as Rainforest Connection."

Regarding high-level recommendations, the report says different stakeholders – governments, development partners, development finance institutions (DFIs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), large tech companies and startups, and research and academic institutions – "can take a number of actions and collaborate to ensure that impactful innovations in Africa can be deployed and scaled. This involves investing in domain-specific and local language data, adopting participatory approaches to data collection, unlocking access to existing data sources, and ensuring data privacy and security."

The report adds that "Strengthening baseline infrastructure and promoting renewable energy, providing hardware and cloud credits, enhancing edge computing capabilities and building institutional capacity will be essential to boost local compute capacity. In addition, fostering academic-industry collaboration, raising awareness and building capacity in the public sector will be essential to create a pipeline of AI talent while ensuring informed policymaking. To foster adoption and usage of AI-enabled services, enhancing digital skills among end users and integrating emerging skills like prompt-engineering into upskilling programs will be key, especially as generative AI solutions gradually grow in Africa."

Moreover, "Stakeholders across sectors can also focus on supporting the wider tech and AI ecosystem to foster an environment conducive to innovation and AI deployment across use cases. This involves engaging in partnerships to unlock access to critical resources for AI entrepreneurs and researchers, and to support the development of the AI ecosystem through data-sharing or infrastructure-sharing initiatives."

I concur with the authors that:
Adopting a consortium-based approach has the potential to help address the financing gap, while adopting innovative finance mechanisms can de-risk investments. Combining funding with technical assistance and go-to-market support can also help founders in their scaling journey. Increased R&D spending will be essential to support local research capacity, while local-global knowledge exchange can drive further momentum and raise awareness about local innovation. As countries work on developing national AI strategies, it will be critical to ensure a collaborative and inclusive process, to include principles for the ethical and safe use of AI, and to establish a clear roadmap for implementation. Policymakers can also consider rolling out regulations in a phased manner to allow innovation to flourish.

Silicon Valley at the Top of the Global Startup Ecosystem in 2023

The 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) by Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network was released at London Tech Week, in collaboration with the Founders Forum, Informa Tech and London & Partners. Presented by Stephan Kuester, Managing Partner at Startup Genome, the GSER analyzes data from over 4.5 million companies across 300+ entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems and features rankings that indicate which ecosystems are currently driving innovation and deep knowledge about startup trends around the world.

Global key findings from the the 2024 GSER include:
  • Top three global ecosystems: Silicon Valley remains at the top, followed by New York City and London tied for #2.
  • The number of new unicorns in 2023 was down 58% from 2022 and 87% from the 2021 peak. With 15 unicorns, Silicon Valley again led all ecosystems for the most new unicorns in 2023, though this was down 80% from 2022. The Tashkent, Lyon, and Rhineland startup ecosystems welcomed their first unicorns in 2023.
  • Series A funding amount in 2023 was down 46% from 2022, and the value of large exits ($50M+) fell 47% over the same period.
  • In 2023, the Series A funding amount share for Top 40 ranked GSER 2024 ecosystems was 65%, down from 79% for these ecosystems in 2019. The share of Series A funding amount for the Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems reached 19% in 2023 vs. 13% in 2019.
  • Q1 2024 has projected higher Series A funding amount and deal count than Q4 2023.
  • Generative AI saw a surge in funding, with nearly 20% of all VC funding in 2023 going to GenAI-focused startups. GenAI VC funding increased 3x in 2023 compared to 2022. Deal counts nearly doubled.
  • In 2023, more than half of new unicorns were in the GenAI and Deep Tech sub-sectors, a higher rate than in 2021.
  • Late-stage Cleantech startups raised 2.5x more funding in H2 2023 than in H1 2020. Europe has outperformed the U.S. and China in terms of Cleantech Series A funding growth from 2021 to 2023.
  • Seoul moved up three spots, now ranked #9, entering the Top 10 ecosystems this year.
  • Tokyo has entered the global Top 10 for the first time, marking the most significant improvement among the Top 10 ecosystems.
  • The top two Chinese ecosystems Beijing and Shanghai, have dropped in the overall rankings to #8 and #11. Shenzhen has shown impressive growth, moving up seven spots to rank #28.
  • Europe is the most represented region in the Emerging Ecosystems Ranking, with a 42% share in the Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems, followed by North America with 27%.
  • Madrid moved up 12 ranks, claiming to #1 in the Emerging Ecosystems Ranking.
  • Barcelona moved up two positions in the Emerging Ecosystems Ranking, reaching #2.
  • Athens has entered the Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems Ranking, reaching the 51-60 range in 2024.
  • Greater Lausanne Region moved up 16 positions, reaching #11 in the Emerging Ecosystems Ranking.
  • Jakarta (#6) and Metro Rhein-Ruhr (#9) both entered the Top 10 Emerging Ecosystems Ranking.
  • Melbourne is ranking as the #32 Global Startup Ecosystem, moving up one spot from GSER 2023.
  • Mexico City has shown impressive growth, reaching the 21-30 range in the Emerging Ecosystems Ranking from the 41-50 range in 2023.
  • The top five ranking sub-Saharan African Ecosystems are Nairobi, Lagos, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Accra.
  • Tel Aviv is the only MENA ecosystem ranking in the Top 40, globally moving up one place to #4 (tied with Los Angeles).

Contributions from thought leaders further enrich the report's extensive, evidence-based findings, which are the product of over a decade of Startup Genome's independent research and policy work."

5G is Pivotal for Ongoing Transformation Efforts in Eurasia

"The early stages of 5G development are underway in Eurasia," according to the GSMA's latest report on the state of Eurasia's mobile economy. Governments in the region, which for the purposes of this report include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, "are prioritizing the technology's integration into national development plans, and operators are investing in 5G infrastructure and applications to meet the growing demand for enhanced connectivity."

What is more, "The Eurasia region is expected to experience a significant increase in 5G adoption in the next few years, based on a return to stable conditions, with projections rising from less than 1% currently to just over 40% by 2030. Although 4G will remain the dominant technology for the foreseeable future, 4G adoption levels will begin to decline from 2026 as 5G gathers momentum because of the availability of more affordable 5G smartphones."

Available in English and Russian, the report's other findings include:
  • 5G will add almost $23 billion to the Eurasian economy by 2030, with 5G adoption rising from less than 1% in 2023 to 41% by 2030. 
  • The mobile industry added $200 billion of economic value to the Eurasian economy in 2023 – equivalent to 7.9% of GDP – and supported 770,000 jobs, highlighting the importance of mobile to the digital economy.
  • However, there is a significant Usage Gap in Eurasia which is widest in Turkmenistan (51%) and Tajikistan (48%), compared to a global average of 37%.
  • Operators are rallying behind the GSMA Open Gateway initiative and integrating AI to enhance customer services and optimize networks.

Addressing artificial intelligence (AI) opportunities for operators, the GSMA says "Mobile operators in the region are integrating AI, particularly generative AI (genAI), to enhance customer services, sales, marketing and network management." For example, "Operators such as MTS and Veon, are increasingly developing use cases, including climate-action solutions and platforms that support local languages to improve the customer experience. Furthermore, operators are prioritizing the ethical use of AI and developing partnerships, such as the collaboration between the GSMA and IBM." The report adds that "Although interest is growing in Eurasia, AI adoption remains limited in the region."

Regarding the financial technology sector, this growing sector "has experienced remarkable growth in Eurasia as digital payments continue to be a dominant service. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in particular possess thriving fintech landscapes thanks to initiatives such as open banking and the introduction of digital currencies. Diverse payment methods, including mobile payments, QR code transactions and buy now, pay later (BNPL) services cater to individuals and businesses, fostering financial integration." The report adds that "Operators in both countries have introduced mobile payment options to explore opportunities to generate revenues beyond core services and to enhance the customer experience. The further expansion of fintech in Eurasia will offer opportunities for operators, particularly with growing 4G and 5G adoption."

As for the mobile industry's impact on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Eurasia, the GSMA explains that "driven by the increased reach of mobile networks and growing take-up of mobile internet services, the mobile industry continues to achieve its impact on SDGs. "In Eurasia, between 2016 and 2022, the mobile industry had the highest impact on SDG 4: Quality Education, which also improved the most compared to the previous year, along with SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. Growing smartphone and mobile internet adoption is contributing to mobile's impact on SDGs."

5G's GDP Contribution in MENA Is Expected to Reach $60B in 2030, Representing 13% of the Overall Annual Economic Impact of Mobile in the Region

As the UN Climate Change Conference finds down in Dubai, many people unfamiliar with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are becoming aware of efforts to diminish the reliance on fossil fuel as the key producer of economic output. Having done business in the MENA region for several years, I have witnessed the efforts made by several governments to promote private sector development in several key industries including mobile technology. In its most recent annual report on the state of MENA's mobile economy, the GSMA points out that the region "home to some of the global leaders in terms of 5G adoption, reflecting the ambitious rollout plans of operators, backed by enabling regulations and strong demand from consumers for new services." Furthermore, "5G networks now cover 75% or more of the population in the GCC states, with operators in those markets increasingly shifting focus to improving 5G coverage in less densely populated areas while also ramping up investment to support the growing momentum behind use cases enabled by 5G standalone (SA) and 5G-Advanced." The GCC, or Gulf Cooperation Council, is comprised of six nations: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The GSMA notes that "5G's GDP contribution is expected to reach $60bn in 2030, representing 13% of the overall annual economic impact of mobile in the region." The report's additional key findings include:

5G SA and 5G-Advanced will be at the heart of 5G's next phase

"By September 2023, six operators in MENA had already rolled out 5G SA networks, contributing to 15% of the global total. Operators in MENA have also begun planning for 5G-Advanced. The use case for 5G-Advanced is straightforward: to enable 5G to support new market demands while waiting for the arrival of 6G. 5G SA and 5G-Advanced will help operators to serve consumer and enterprise customers more flexibly. The adoption of private 5G networks, meanwhile, has been slower in MENA compared with other regions, but there is growing evidence that this is starting to change."

Operators look to monetize tower assets

"The majority of tower assets have traditionally remained in the hands of mobile operators in MENA. However, following STC's creation of Tawal in 2019, the first tower company in Saudi Arabia, an increasing number of operators in MENA have embarked upon infrastructure reshuffling, including the monetization of underutilized tower assets. Independent tower companies have been among the main acquirers of operator sites, utilizing multitenancy to drive profitability. In other instances, operators have spun off infrastructure in partnership with private equity groups or issued IPOs for their tower assets. Tower sales and spin-offs enable operators to reallocate capital towards areas with higher growth prospects."

GCC telcos target stakes in European counterparts

"International expansion has been a core growth and diversification strategy for GCC telcos looking for opportunities to scale up and drive new revenue and subscriber growth. Historically, GCC operators had bet big on emerging markets across South Asia, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and other parts of MENA. However, recent developments suggest a growing interest in long-established European operators. e& and STC are leading the charge, having made several high-profile deals and announcements since early 2022. The strategic rationale lies in the potential to become global players in the TMT space, both in terms of scale and innovation."

The shift to circularity gathers momentum

"In response to escalating concerns regarding the generation of e-waste and the unsustainable depletion of natural resources, the concept of circularity has surged to the forefront of the agendas for policymakers and industry stakeholders. This amplified focus on sustainability is particularly evident in view of the region's role as the host for the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai. Governments and industry participants in the region are taking proactive measures to establish new channels and suppliers dedicated to collecting, refurbishing and reselling devices and network equipment."

Regulatory enablers and innovation hubs fuel fintech growth

"MENA has experienced a significant surge in fintech services, driven by increased investments and regulatory enablement. Regulatory sandboxes and dedicated fintech hubs have been important contributors to this, with digital payment solutions gaining prominence in recent years, including
contactless payments, open banking and buy now, pay later (BNPL) services. Mobile operators are actively involved in the fintech space, expanding access and inclusion for consumers and businesses through a variety of financial-services products and partnerships with established fintech providers."

Significant opportunities exist for MENA entrepreneurs to develop localized solutions in AI, IoT, cybersecurity, EdTech, fintech, digital health, e-commerce, and enterprise services. As the report explains, "Beyond its contribution to GDP, the mobile ecosystem also supports over 800,000 jobs (directly and indirectly) and makes a substantial contribution to the funding of the public sector, with $20 billion raised through taxation in 2022. This economic contribution underlines the importance of stakeholders taking the right steps to sustain the impact of mobile services on the digital economy, with spectrum availability a key driver of affordable 5G for all."

5G to Benefit the Sub-Saharan Africa Economy by $11 Billion in 2030

In its annual report on the state of the mobile economy in sub-Saharan Africa, the GSMA says the mobile connectivity on the continent "continues to drive digital transformation and socioeconomic advancements. This underlines the need for continued efforts to address the persisting barriers that impact mobile internet adoption in the region, particularly the affordability of devices, online safety concerns and the lack of digital skills." The UK-based organization that represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide adds: "Meanwhile, authorities and enterprises see an opportunity to leverage growing 4G and 5G networks, alongside emerging technologies such as AI and IoT, to enhance productivity and efficiency in service delivery."

Findings of the report, which is available in English and Français, include:

Growing 5G momentum

"In 2022, there was a marked uptick in 5G-related activities in Sub-Saharan Africa, including 5G commercial launches in 15 countries and a growing number of spectrum allocations. This comes at a time when 3G is the most dominant technology in the region (accounting for 55% of total connections in 2022) while 4G is already dominant in other regions, implying network and customer readiness for the transition to 4G. The approach to 5G in the region will need to consider the current connectivity landscape and unique market features that could affect the rollout and adoption of the technology. 5G network ecosystem players in the region must also find ways to deliver cost-effective and efficient 5G networks, balancing investment and value creation."

Steering growth with AI

"The emergence of new AI tools and use cases is accelerating the implementation of AI across various verticals and business processes. Most AI developments are occurring in advanced markets. However, the technology can be utilized in any scenario where there is sufficient data to draw insights. As a result, several industry players are already taking steps to apply AI across a variety of use cases in Sub-Saharan Africa. The potential benefit of AI in the region is significant, given that it can help offset the impact of limited resources and poor infrastructure in the delivery of many life-enhancing services, such as healthcare and education. Mobile operators in the region have employed AI at different levels, from improving network operations and customer services to achieving efficiencies and cost savings."

Climate-related risks spur circular economy principles

"The concept of circularity has risen to the top of the agenda for policymakers and industry players in light of growing concerns around the generation of e-waste and unsustainable levels of consumption of natural resources. Although the technical lifespan of a mobile device is now between four and seven years, the average use period of mobile devices is only around three years. Governments and industry players have a role to play in incentivizing consumers. This includes building new channels and suppliers to collect, refurbish and resell devices and implementing awareness campaigns on sustainability. Some operators in Sub-Saharan Africa are already taking a lead in this regard, with initiatives to drive circularity in mobile phones and other digital devices."

Improving smartphone access

"Smartphone affordability is a key barrier to using mobile internet. The average selling price of smartphones in Africa has reduced significantly in recent years, with an influx of devices priced at below $100 – but the cost remains unaffordable for many. The challenge for manufacturers is to produce devices at low enough price points that align with local earning capacities and allow them to gain market share. To ease the current cost burden, operators offer a range of initiatives, including device financing plans, instalment payments and entry-level smartphones through partnerships with manufacturers."

Collaboration and innovation in fintech is on the rise

"Fintech has become increasingly prominent in Sub-Saharan Africa, driven by the need to improve regional financial and digital inclusion. The industry has seen a rise in partnerships and innovation, leading to the diversification of products on offer, particularly in the payments segments. Operators have partnered with ecosystem players to expand products and offer options such as buy now, pay later (BNPL). At the same time, the growing fintech startup industry continues to attract investors, allowing them to improve access to a variety of financial products for both individuals and small businesses, such as microlending and B2B payments."

Policies for safe and inclusive development

"As cyberattacks continue to grow in scale and scope, governments face increasing pressure to protect their citizens and infrastructure and establish a framework for the mobile industry. Sub-Saharan Africa's rapid technological evolution makes the region an attractive target for fraud and cyberattacks."

According to the GSMA, "5G is expected to benefit the Sub-Saharan Africa economy by $11 billion in 2030, accounting for more than 6% of the overall economic impact of mobile." While it is encouraging to learn that mobile connectivity in Sub-Saharan Africa continues to drive digital transformation and socioeconomic advances, I have concerns about the mobile internet usage gap, which refers to individuals who are not using mobile internet despite living in an area covered by mobile broadband networks. of 59%. Nevertheless, the continent holds significant opportunities for entrepreneurs to develop innovative solutions in AI, IoT, cybersecurity, EdTech, fintech, digital health, e-commerce, and enterprise services.

5G Will Represent 91% of Mobile Connections in North America by 2023, Up From 39% in 2022

"The US and Canada are among the global leaders in terms of 5G adoption, reflecting the ambitious rollout plans of operators and strong demand from consumers for new services," the GSMA says in its latest report on the state of North America's mobile economy. "However, following extensive 5G network buildout over the last few years, capex levels will begin to trend downwards as operators turn their attention to generating a return on investment." The UK-based organization, which represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, adds: "The focus over the next few years will be on improving 5G coverage in less densely populated areas while also ramping up investment to support the growing momentum behind use cases enabled by 5G standalone (SA) and 5G-Advanced."

The report's findings include:

The 5G monetization imperative grows

"As 5G adoption grows, the monetization imperative will escalate. GSMA Intelligence research shows that the mobile ARPU trend in the US and Canada improved in the 12 months after launching 5G. The technology is also having a positive impact on revenue growth for North American operators beyond mobile services, as highlighted by fixed wireless access (FWA) momentum in the region. Looking forward, the enterprise sector is expected to be the main growth driver for operators. 5G SA brings a host of new capabilities that will be crucial to monetizing 5G investments, including improved support for network slicing. There are also synergies between 5G SA and private wireless networks, opening up new opportunities for mobile operators."

Generative AI takes center stage

"Mobile operators have utilized AI for a while now to varying degrees. However, the emergence of generative AI has pushed the envelope on AI capabilities and thrust AI technology into boardroom conversations globally. With generative AI tools, operators can attempt to automate more complex customer service functions that require a better understanding of context, improved ability to follow a conversation and advanced synthesis of information. The technology can also be used to improve network operations and deliver personalized service plans. However, ethical concerns around the technology still need to be addressed. AI regulation will therefore continue to move up the policy agenda as governments develop frameworks for regulating the use of new AI tools."

eSIM momentum builds

"The last few years have been crucial for eSIM development and commercialization, highlighted by Apple’s launch of eSIM-only smartphones in September 2022 in the US and Canada. There has since been an acceleration in operator eSIM deployments and commercial launches. However, eSIM awareness among consumers remains limited. As the main contact points with end users, operators and smartphone manufacturers have a key role to play in accelerating consumer awareness and adoption. Additionally, eSIM technology has long been seen as a major enabler and accelerator of IoT deployments across multiple sectors. This has led North American operators to partner with a range of players across the IoT ecosystem to accelerate eSIM adoption in the region."

This reflects growing momentum behind digital financial services as the competition heats up in the fintech market. For example, Apple recently announced the launch of a buy now, pay later (BNPL) service, which should contribute to a boost in e-commerce transactions. It has also launched a high-yield savings account through a partnership with Goldman Sachs, which reportedly brought in $990 million in deposits over its first four days. By the end of the first week, around 240,000 accounts had reportedly been opened."

GSMA points out that "5G connectivity is already proving to be a powerful driver of GDP growth, with 5G's contribution to GDP in North America expected to surpass $200 billion in 2030 (16% of the overall annual economic impact of mobile in the region)." What is more, "Beyond its contribution to GDP, the mobile ecosystem also supports 2.1 million jobs (directly and indirectly) and makes a substantial contribution to the funding of the public sector, with $130 billion raised through taxation in 2022. Mobile Money Services Are Growing Faster Than Predicted, Says GSMA Report

According GSMA's State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money 2023 report, "mobile money is now considered a mainstream financial service in many countries." Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the UK-based organization says: "During the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile money enabled millions of people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to access digital financial services (DFS) for their daily needs." Available in English and French, the report "looks at the growth of mobile money in a post-pandemic world."

The report notes that adoption and active usage continue to rise. "Registered mobile money accounts grew by 13% year on year, from 1.4 billion in 2021 to 1.6 billion in 2022. This can be attributed, in part, to regulatory changes in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Nigeria and Ethiopia where mobile money adoption rose rapidly."

What is more, digital transactions are increasing as the use of cash slows down. "Transaction values grew by 22% between 2021 and 2022, from $1 trillion to around $1.26 trillion," the report explains. "However, the share of cash-based transactions in the overall transaction mix declined, with cash-in and cash-out transactions dropping nearly two percentage points. This is due to a significant rise in digital transactions, particularly interoperable bank transfers and bill payments."

Encouragingly, global daily transaction values are exceeding predictions. "In 2020, global daily transaction values exceeded $2 billion. The State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money 2021 (covering data from 2020) suggested this could reach $3 billion a day by the end of 2022. This figure has been surpassed, with $3.45 billion transacted daily via mobile money in 2022."

Mobile money remains a key savings channel, according to the GSMA. In 2022, approximately 60% of mobile money providers (MMPs) "offered users a savings account. Half of these providers did not offer a savings product in 2021. The World Bank Global Findex 2021 found that 15% of adults in Sub-Saharan Africa, or 39% of all mobile money account owners in the region, saved using a mobile money account."

Disappointingly, women in LMICs are 28% less likely than men to own a mobile money account. "More women have a mobile money account than ever before and are using it at a similar rate as men on a 30-day basis. However, there is still a gender gap in account ownership that has recently widened in countries such as Nigeria and Pakistan." The report continues to explain that "One of the main barriers to closing the gender gap is mobile phone ownership: increasing mobile phone ownership can improve mobile money adoption rates among women. Other steps to close the mobile money gender gap include increasing women's digital skills and awareness of the benefits of mobile money, and tackling social norms and other barriers that are preventing women from using it."

Another key finding of the report is that regulation has been influenced by challenges such as taxation and fraud. "Regulation has focused on ensuring payment systems remain safe and efficient while also encouraging innovation. However, the mobile money industry is facing several regulatory challenges. Some countries have introduced taxes on mobile money transactions and fees that do not align with their financial inclusion objectives." Moreover, "Fraud also remains an industrywide issue, which many regulators are aiming to overcome through improved consumer awareness and capacity building."

China's 5G Enterprise Services to See Greater Commercial Scale in 2023, Says GSMA

"China's economy is on the road to recovery, following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions from late 2022," the GSMA, an organization that presents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, said in its latest report on the state of China's mobile economy. "Mobile connectivity served as a lifeline throughout the pandemic and will play an even more crucial role in enabling the safe return to social interaction and the restart of many economic activities."

The report, which is available in English and Chinese, notes that "authorities across China have outlined plans to integrate digital technologies, underpinned by advanced mobile connectivity, into every aspect of society to sustain China's competitiveness in an evolving global economy. In 2022, mobile technologies and services generated 5.5% of China's GDP – a contribution that amounted to $1.1 trillion of economic value added."

The UK-based organization adds that "5G will underpin future mobile innovation and services, building on current deployments and adoption." What is more, "The number of 5G base stations in China exceeded 2.3 million at the end of 2022, including approximately 887,000 built during the year. China will be the first market with 1 billion 5G connections, reaching the milestone by 2025. The report also says that "By 2030, 5G connections in China will reach 1.6 billion, accounting for nearly a third of the global total. The technology will add $290 billion to the Chinese economy in 2030, with benefits spread across industries."

Additional key highlights from the report include:
  • 5G enterprise services to see greater commercial scale in 2023: "Mainland China is the largest 5G market in the world, accounting for more than 60% of global 5G connections at the end of 2022. With strong take-up of 5G among consumers, the focus of operators is now increasingly shifting to 5G for enterprises. This offers opportunities to grow revenues beyond connectivity in adjacent areas such as cloud services – a segment where operators in China have recently made significant progress."
  • Dedicated networks on the rise: "Private and dedicated wireless network solutions are back in vogue, as 5G’s enhanced capabilities move deployments beyond low-profile, niche offerings. Manufacturing and mining are two sectors where demand for private and dedicated 5G networks in China looks particularly strong."
  • Innovation underpins China's digital ambitions: "China's digital ambitions are driven by a combination of external and internal factors, notably a slowdown in growth of the real economy. The digital ecosystem, including start-ups, will be at the forefront of efforts to realize China's digital ambitions, with innovation and investments driving the creation of new solutions across the focus areas of China's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035."
  • The mobile industry shifts towards circularity: "Across the telecoms ecosystem, sustainability has extended beyond corporate social responsibility (CSR) to become a core strategic priority. Industry players are increasingly adopting a model of production, service offering and consumption that involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible."
  • Fintech presents opportunities for mobile industry players: "China has developed a lead in fintech services over the past decade, driven by investments in an expanding portfolio of products and surging public demand for electronic payment options. As fintech innovators increasingly leverage emerging technologies (such as big data, AI and cloud computing) to enable more complex and customized solutions, operators have an opportunity to play a greater role in fintech."

  • Unique mobile subscribers in China will total 1.33 billion by 2030;
  • There were 1.17 billion mobile internet subscribers in China in 2022, equivalent to 79% adoption;
  • 5G will overtake 4G in 2024 to become the dominant mobile technology in China;
  • China to be among leading 5G markets globally, with 88% adoption by 2030;
  • Smartphone connections will total 1.73 billion in China by 2030, accounting for 93% of connections;
  • Smartphone data traffic in China to more than double over the period to 2028;
  • Licensed cellular IoT connections in China to double to 3.6 billion by 2030;
  • Revenue growth is set to moderate in China over the coming years as 5G adoption reaches maturity;
  • Operators in China will spend $291 billion on their networks during 2023–2030, with most on 5G;
  • The mobile sector added $1.1 trillion of economic value to the Chinese economy in 2022;
  • At the end of the decade, mobile's economic contribution will reach $1.3 trillion;
  • The mobile ecosystem in China supported 6 million jobs in 2022;
  • The fiscal contribution of the mobile ecosystem reached $110 billion in 2022;
  • 5G will add almost $290 billion to the economy in China in 2030; and
  • Manufacturing and services will benefit the most from 5G in 2030.

Regarding the sixth generation mobile system standard (6G), the GSMA points out that "The mobile industry is already studying how 6G will shape the future of mobile. For regulators, ministries, operators, vendors and researchers, spectrum policy for 6G is becoming increasingly important." Furthermore, "2023 marks the beginning of a long journey as new studies begin when the WRC-27 cycle kicks off."

The report concludes by explaining how "6G is expected to become the primary mobile technology in the 2030s and will offer an enhanced user experience over previous generations. It promises ultra-fast data rates with lower latency, significant energy efficiency improvements and greater reliability."

Mobile Connectivity Is a Lifeline for Society

In its latest report that provides insights on the state of the mobile economy worldwide, the GSMA says "Mobile connectivity continues to be a lifeline for society, helping the most vulnerable people in areas affected by conflict and natural disasters to stay connected. It is also enabling advanced connectivity capabilities needed by verticals to innovate amid diverse political, social and macroeconomic headwinds."

The UK-based organization representing the interests of mobile operators worldwide adds that "By the end of 2022, over 5.4 billion people globally subscribed to a mobile service, including 4.4 billion people who also used the mobile internet." The report notes that "The mobile internet usage gap has narrowed markedly in the last five years – from 50% in 2017 to 41% in 2022 on average – but still remains significant and demands urgent attention from all stakeholders."

What is more, "In 2022, mobile technologies and services generated 5% of global GDP, a contribution that amounted to $5.2 trillion of economic value added, and supported 28 million jobs across the wider mobile ecosystem. 5G will underpin future mobile innovation and services, building on ongoing deployments and adoption. 5G adoption will reach 17% this year, rising to 54% (equivalent to 5.3 billion connections) by 2030. The technology will add almost $1 trillion to the global economy in 2030, with benefits spread across all industries."

Key trends shaping the mobile ecosystem include:
  • 5G consumer monetization comes into focus: "Throughout 2023, some 30 new markets will launch 5G services; importantly, many of these will be developing markets across Africa and Asia, making 5G a truly global trend. As 5G adoption continues to scale, the monetization imperative will grow."
  • Private 5G builds momentum: "Private wireless solutions are back in vogue, as 5G's enhanced capabilities allow deployments to move beyond low-profile niche offerings."

  • There were 5.4 billon unique mobile subscribers in 2022, rising to 6.3 billion by 2030;
  • Globally, there were 4.4 billion mobile internet users in 2022, equivalent to 55% penetration;
  • 5G will overtake 4G in 2029 to become the dominant mobile technology by the end of this decade;
  • 5G adoption will be over 85% in the top 5G markets by 2030, led by the six Gulf Cooperation Council states (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates), developed Asia Pacific, and North America;
  • There will be 9 billion smartphone connections by 2030, equivalent to 92% of total connections;
  • Globally, smartphone data traffic will rise more than threefold in the period to 2028, with the biggest users in North America and Northeast Asia;
  • The total number of licensed cellular IoT connections will double to 5.3 billion by 2030, with Greater China accounting for two-thirds;
  • Revenue growth is expected to remain in positive territory in both developed and developing regions for the period to 2030;
  • At the end of the decade, mobile's economic contribution will surpass $6 trillion; and
  • The fiscal contribution of the mobile ecosystem reached $530 billion in 2022.

As for the mobile industry's impact on the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the GSMA explains that "There are now 11 SDGs where mobile's contribution is over 50, compared to six SDGs in 2020 and none in 2015." Furthermore, "The mobile industry continues to achieve its highest impact on SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, driven by the reach of mobile networks and take-up of mobile internet services."

The report encouragingly adds that "The biggest improvements were recorded in the industry's contribution to SDG 1: No Poverty, SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 4: Quality Education. This is due to the increasing proportion of people using mobile for activities such as accessing government services, applying and searching for jobs, and obtaining educational information for themselves or their children." The GSMA also notes that there was "an improvement in the affordability of mobile data and devices. This comes after affordability worsened in 2020 because of the decline in per capita income due to the Covid-19 pandemic."

Southeast Asia's Digital Economy Could Reach $1T GMV by 2030

Southeast Asia's (SEA) top digital economies grew faster than expected in 2022 and are set to reach $200 billion in total value of transactions made this year, according to a report by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company. And in the face of economic headwinds, the future looks bright for SEA as the report says investors remain confident in SEA's long-term prospects and the opportunities they bring in up-and-coming countries and sectors.

Among the ten countries that are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which serves as a political and economic union of member states promoting intergovernmental cooperation and facilitates economic, political, security, military, educational, and sociocultural integration between its members and countries in the Asia-Pacific, the report focuses on ASEAN's six largest members: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The report's key findings include:
  • Navigating macroeconomic headwinds: Just as countries in SEA embarked on a return to pre-pandemic normality, global headwinds started to blow, threatening to derail a full economic recovery. Rising interest rates and high inflationary pressure have also been impacting consumer demand, particularly the discretionary sectors that sit at the core of the digital economy.
  • Approaching $200B in rough seas: Despite these macroeconomic headwinds, SEA's digital economy remains on course to reach ~$200B in gross merchandise value (GMV) in 2022. In fact, it is reaching this threshold three years earlier than expected in the e-Conomy SEA 2016 report. Digital adoption continues to rise even today, albeit at a slower pace than the steep acceleration seen at the height of the pandemic.
  • Urban consumers still drive the economy: Across urban areas, affluent consumers and their young digital native counterparts continue to represent the largest portion of the digital economy. For these two segments, the opportunity for growth lies in deeper engagement, including more frequent and valuable orders, subscriptions, or cross-selling services such as consumer lending. Meanwhile, adoption and spend by urban consumers 'on a budget' and suburban consumers remain lower, leaving digital players to figure out more economically sustainable ways to serve them.
  • Sectors encounter different growth trends: SEA's digital economy sectors are following three distinct trendlines. E-commerce follows an S-shaped growth curve, in which it continues on its growth trajectory, but from a higher starting point after the steep acceleration during the pandemic. Others, such as food delivery and online media, are returning to their trendlines after a two-year spike. And lastly, travel and transport are moving along a U-shaped recovery, with pre-pandemic levels still some miles away.
  • Favorable conditions uplift financial services. The adoption and usage of digital financial services (DFS) have flourished across the board, propelled by a shift from offline to online and the positive financial market conditions of the last few years. With rising interest rates and a riskier lending environment, however, fintech players, platforms, and newly launched digibanks will see their business models stress-tested. Meanwhile, banks and insurance companies are rapidly digitalizing their services and maintaining a stronghold on affluent consumers.
  • Prudence clouds tech investments. Tech investments in SEA remain robust this year. However, the funding landscape tells a tale of two ends: early-stage deals are continuing with strong momentum, while late-stage deals are seeing more pronounced dips and a pause in IPOs. Meanwhile, DFS has overtaken e-commerce in investment volume. Investors will be cautious in the short-term as most do not expect a return to 2021 deal activity and valuation peaks in the next couple of years. Nonetheless, most investors remain bullish in SEA's medium- to long-term potential, and have $15B dry powder on hand. The report notes that increasing interest in emerging markets, like the Philippines and Vietnam, and in nascent sectors, like SaaS and Web3.
  • Towards a sustainable digital economy. The SEA digital economy is expected to produce 20MT of emissions by 2030—significant, albeit an order of magnitude lower than other environmental impact-intensive sectors. Digital players have been rolling out reducing and recycling initiatives, but more can be done to further lower impact by up to 30-40% over time. In the meantime, platforms can play a positive role in raising awareness among SEA consumers, and move towards closing the prevailing ‘say-do’ gap.
  • Economic contribution meets social concerns. On the social front, the digital economy has created 160K high-skilled jobs and indirectly supports nearly 30M jobs, while platforms have enabled over 20M merchants and 6M restaurants to grow their businesses online. Concerns exist, nonetheless, around the welfare of worker-partners, necessitating dialogue between institutions and platforms.
  • Charting the course for the digital decade. SEA's 'digital decade' has just begun. The course to exceed $300B by 2025 depends on the shape of recovery amid today's uncertainties, while the path to a $600B-1T digital economy in 2030 remains geared on SEA's economic fundamentals. A growing emphasis on sustainable growth means profits may become as relevant as GMV when it comes to measuring progress.
Existing enablers like payments and logistics have come into place, but the talent challenge is now shifting from quantity to quality. New enablers, like digital inclusion of consumers ‘on a budget’ and suburbanites, are key to unlocking SEA's full potential. Progress has been limited, however, with institutional support potentially the missing link to bridging the divide. All in all, SEA's digital economy is grounded on strong social and economic fundamentals, and offline to online trends, which provides much to be optimistic about especially as the region settles into its digital decade.'


Over the past 20 years, I have observed Southeast Asia's impressive economic rise. When my clients supporting the digital economy ask which global markets should they consider for corporate expansion, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are almost always at the top of my list. Despite economic headwinds, I remain optimistic about the sustainable development of the region's digital economy which could reach $1 trillion GMV by 2033 provided such growth is pursued in a sustainable way.

Report Explores a New Era for Digital Payments

Following a white paper, Going digital: payments in the post-Covid world, The Economist Intelligence Unit (The EIU) published in 2021, which showed how digital channels were replacing traditional modes of payments across the world amid greater uptake of mobile wallets and other forms of digital payments, The EIU recently developed a new dataset, along with five-year forecasts, confirming these trends. Entitled Beyond borders: a new era for digital payments, this white paper offers an overview of The EIU's forecasts for digital payments, as well as the accompanying stagnation of automated teller machine (ATM) numbers and the mixed outlook for card payments. It also looks at the new frontier for disruption: cross-border payments.

Below are the paper's key forecasts:
  • Following a surge during the pandemic, when lockdowns forced consumers online, growth in digital payments will soften during our five-year forecast period (2022-26).
  • The number of ATMs will stagnate or decline, while debit and credit cards will struggle to maintain market share as mobile payment platforms gain more traction.
  • While digital disruption to domestic payments continues, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war will cause parallel disruption to cross-border payment systems and potentially challenge the dominance of SWIFT.
  • Countries will seek to interlink their national fast-payments systems, reducing intermediaries and bringing down the cost of sending money abroad.
  • Countries across Southeast Asia are in the process of interlinking their fast-payments systems to allow travelers across the region to purchase goods and services by scanning quick-response (QR) codes.

The report also points that APIs, tokenization and blockchain will together become the new normal. "As well as challenging SWIFT, disrupting cross-border payments will mean adopting innovative solutions and emerging technologies, including blockchain, APIs and tokenization."
  • APIs have been a game-changer for retail payments, providing end-to-end tracking of payments and confirmation of transactions to all parties involved. They enable interaction across the digital marketplace, higher levels of transparency, and a seamless experience for both customers and merchants.
  • Tokenization, which creates a unique code for every single transaction conducted through an API, and blockchain technology, have also emerged as a major way to ensure security, improve efficiency and raise the transparency of payments.
  • Blockchain technology employs encrypted distributed ledgers that eliminate the need for any intermediaries but still provide verification of transactions in real time.
  • As with domestic payments, real-time payments will also become a cornerstone for the acceleration of cross-border payments.

With respect to governments encouraging development of cross-border payments linkages, The EIU expects "increasing involvement from government entities to facilitate the development of the fintech sector, promote financial inclusion or aid the flow of remittances from overseas workers." The paper further says "Singapore (with PayNow) and Thailand (PromptPay) were the first countries to interlink their fast-payments systems in April 2021. More countries, especially in Asia, have since unveiled plans for similar tie-ups." Importantly, "This process will also be facilitated by the development of central bank digital currencies. These digital currencies aim to provide efficient and inclusive payments services—which traditional systems have failed to provide—and also emerge as trustworthy alternatives to private projects such as stablecoins, cryptocurrencies that (in theory) peg their value to another currency or commodity."

At the same time, the paper notes that "countries like Russia, China and India could encourage international trade denominated in their own currencies, or enter into bilateral trade agreements—between the rupee and ruble, for instance—to avoid settlements in dollars or euros." What is more, "Although the US dollar’s dominance of international trade will remain unchallenged in the short and medium term, emerging powers in Asia will try to reduce the greenback’s influence to avoid runs on their foreign-exchange reserves and mitigate the impact of any future disruptions."


The report provides a thorough explanation on how digital channels are replacing traditional modes of domestic payment around the world amid greater uptake of digital wallets and other forms of mobile transactions. Today's Digital Economy Is the Economy, Says Annual Report on the Global Startup Ecosystem

The entrepreneurial universe was a much smaller place when Startup Genome published its first Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) in 2012. As stated in its latest version of its annual report on the global startup ecosystem, "Six of the top 10 hubs were in the United States, and just one Asian city — Bangalore — broke the top-20 ranking. Four ecosystems accounted for the year's whopping nine unicorns (a term that would not even be coined until 2013). Almost two-thirds of early-stage funding was concentrated in North America."

Ten years later since the publication of its initial report, Startup Genome, a policy advisory and research organization for public and private organizations committed to accelerating the success of their startup ecosystem, says with "$1.65 trillion in funding, 1,227 unicorns, a global pandemic, and massive revolutions in everything from AI and social media to autonomous vehicles and precision medicine later, and the situation is very different. Today, the digital economy is the economy — or at least the economy's future."

Below are the report's key findings:
  • The same five ecosystems remain at the top of the ranking as in 2020 and 2021, but Beijing has dropped one place, with Boston taking its former place at #4. Silicon Valley is #1, followed by New York City and London tied at #2, Boston at #4, and Beijing at #5.
  • Seoul entered the global top 10 ecosystems for the first time, up six places from #16 in 2021 and #20 in 2020.
  • Several Indian ecosystems have risen in the rankings, most notably Delhi, which is 11 places higher than in 2021, entering the top 30 for the first time at #26. Bangalore has moved up one place from last year, to #22.
  • Overall, China's ecosystems have declined in the rankings, a reflection of the relative decline in early-stage funding in comparison to other ecosystems.
  • Helsinki has risen more than 20 places from last year, joining the runners-up category at joint #35.
  • A record 540 companies achieved unicorn status in 2021, up from 150 in 2020.
  • In 2021, Brazil saw 237% growth in the dollar amount of Series B+ rounds compared to 2020. The nation's total exit amount for 2021 was $49 billion, a huge leap from $1 billion in 2020.
  • Asia experienced a 312% increase in the dollar amount of exits over $50 million from 2020 to 2021.
  • In 2021, the dollar amount of exits in London grew 413% from 2020. The ecosystem's Series B+ rounds increased 162% in terms of dollar amount from 2020, and it saw 55% more $50 million+ exits in 2021 versus 2020.

With respect to the top 100 emerging ecosystems, the Startup Genome explains that these "ecosystems are startup communities at earlier stages of growth, and our ranking methodology is adapted to reflect this, to showcase the strengths in these ecosystems that have high potential to be global top performers in the coming years." Key findings from the top 100 emerging ecosystems include:
  • Oslo is in the top 20 Emerging Ecosystems (#19), a huge leap of over 20 places from last year, and a reflection of two unicorns — industrial IoT platform Cognite and online grocery Oda — helping to increase its Market Reach.
  • Minneapolis has moved up 18 places from last year, to #4. Six exits over $50 million and one $1 billion+ exit helped to improve its Performance score.
  • Manchester-Liverpool has moved up eight places from 2021, to #6. A $1 billion+ exit and Matillion — an integration platform for cloud data warehouses — becoming a unicorn add $7.8 billion to its Ecosystem Value.
  • India's recent success is reflected in both Chennai (tied #31–40) and Pune (tied #51–60) moving up in the rankings. The Chennai ecosystem saw a $1 billion exit in business software startup Freshworks, which moved to Silicon Valley after founding in India.
  • Mumbai's has moved out of the Emerging Ecosystems ranking and into the global overall rankings (tied #36). Three exits over $1 billion (including Nykka's $7 billion valuation at IPO) and six unicorns contributed to the move.
  • Pittsburgh moved up 10 spots from last year to #13, aided by Duolingo's $3.6 billion exit.
  • Prague has moved up more than 40 spots, to tied #41-50, thanks to three exits over $50 million and one over $1 billion. These big exits are helping to increase its ranking in Performance and Market Reach.

"The top 100 Emerging Ecosystems are collectively worth over $1 trillion in Ecosystem Value," the report notes, "which is a 96% increase from last year. Europe and North America still boast the majority of emerging ecosystems, and Latin America, MENA, and Africa have held steady in the number of ecosystems in the top 100 from last year, with five, four, and three respectively." What is more, "Asia has 17 entries in the Emerging Ecosystems ranking versus 18 last year. Oceania has the same two entries in the top 100 as last year: New Zealand and Brisbane."

The report also provides an important analysis on the global startup sub-sector, which include the following key findings:
  • Since the GSER 2021, there has been an overall increase in the growth of exits and a general slowing in the growth of Series A rounds. The increase in the growth of exits has helped investors hold dry powder (marketable securities that are highly liquid and considered cash-like), as revealed in the record high VC investment amounts.
  • Cybersecurity has received growing attention, as a side effect of the acceleration in digital transformation. Exit growth in this sub-sector has increased by 14% since the GSER 2021.
  • All sub-sectors have accelerated in growth overall, with the largest growth in artificial intelligence (AI) & big data (BD), Blockchain, Fintech, and Advanced Manufacturing.
  • AI & BD is becoming an overarching vertical that is increasingly overlapping with other industries both in terms of the amount of investment and count. In 2014, the overlap in the investment amount was outperforming the count, showing fewer investments in AI and tech. In 2020, the trend is the opposite, indicating competition among global AI startups to attract funds.
  • Cleantech is the only sub-sector that has seen a considerable increase in count at both Series A (by 35%) and exit (by 12%, both 2016-2017 vs. 2020-2021), indicating increased innovation and investor focus on this topic.
  • Advanced Manufacturing has grown by 70% in early-stage funding (2016-2017 vs. 2020-2021), driven by supply chain needs and a focus on improving efficiency and productivity through automation, monitoring, and failure prediction.

Having been involved with startups for close to 30 years, I concur with JF Gauthier, Startup Genome's founder and chief executive, that "The world of tech startups is changing. More importantly, tech startups are changing the world." The coronavirus pandemic accelerated the development of the digital economy. And as previously stated, today's digital economy is the economy.

GSMA Report Explores How to Reach and Empower Women in Digital Solutions in the Agriculture Last Mile

"In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the digitization of agricultural value chains is enabling access to markets, assets and services for smallholder farmers," the GSMA says in a report that examines "the limited participation of women in digitized agricultural value chains by identifying the main barriers for women in D4Ag [digital agriculture] initiatives and shedding light on best practices to increase women's participation and empowerment in these value chains."

The report further notes that D4Ag "solutions, such as digital payments and digital procurement, create efficiencies for both agribusinesses and farmers in the last mile. Digital procurement solutions can generate a range of records, including farmers' production data that enable the creation of economic identities and help them access finance. Digital procurement solutions can also be bundled with digital advisory services that provide farmers with vital information on new farming techniques, weather forecasts and crop production."

"Yet," according to the GSMA, "women farmers are being left behind. Although they represent 43 percent of the agricultural labor force, women face social and structural barriers that typically relegate them to traditional, low-value and labor-intensive activities, such as plowing, sowing and harvesting." What is more, "Restrictive social norms, lack of access to resources and the mobile gender gap all make it more challenging for women to participate fully in agricultural value chains and embrace the digital agriculture solutions that can connect them to markets and services and strengthen their decision-making power."

The report identifies the following digital solutions in the agricultural last mile:
  1. Digital profiles: Mobile for authentication and verification, and a tool to create economic identities/digital profiles
  2. Track-and-trace systems, farm management systems: Product verification services, accountability tools
  3. Information services: Agricultural extension, education, certification standards, skills development
  4. Digital financial services: Mobile money-enabled transfers, payments and financial service
  5. IoT applications for agriculture: Equipment logistics, crop, soil and weather monitoring, smart warehousing
  6. Agribusiness analytics: Predictive analytics, precision agriculture

With respect the barriers facing women in digitized agricultural value chains, the report looks at the social norms, lack of access to resources, and mobile gender gap that contribute to these barriers. It also presents steps to increase women's participation in digitized value chains including defining a gender strategy to guide gender-inclusive interventions, creating a gender-inclusive environment through foundational interventions, and addressing women's barriers through gender-inclusive interventions.

The report produces the following conclusions:
  • "Women's low participation in digitized agricultural value chains can only be addressed through approaches that purposely consider women as well as men."
  • "The early impact of gender-inclusive last-mile digital solutions on women farmers' participation and decision-making power is promising." through the efforts of organizations creating digital agriculture solutions that has "increased yields and incomes, as well as increased decision-making power in the household."
  • "A deeper understanding of women's agency and the social norms shaping their lives is needed to bridge the gap in commercial agriculture value chains."
  • "Donors and impact investors are uniquely positioned to push gender inclusive interventions forward. They can inject capital in initiatives that purposely include and target women, and ultimately help to create a level playing field in which women smallholder farmers have equitable access to digital solutions."
  • "Donors and investors should first apply a gender lens to their own investment strategies to identify and reward new D4Ag investees that already apply, and want to test, approaches that reach both women and men."
  • "Donors and investors should also leverage their ongoing investments to encourage investees to adopt best practices, such as consistently collecting and using sex-disaggregated data, or involving women in human-centric design research to inform the design of solutions. Investors can also make investments that strengthen the resilience of women farmers to climate change since they are disproportionately affected as a result of lower input use or weaker safety nets."

Lastly, I support the report's assertion that "By incentivizing and rewarding D4Ag providers, donors and impact investors can guide them towards gender-inclusive approaches that aim to improve women's influence, leadership roles and decision-making power, and promote sensitive and equal gender norms at all levels. Without this, gender inequalities are not only likely to remain, but become exacerbated."
